Winter Skin

Updated: Oct 31, 2023

Winter days are coming!

As we say farewell to British Summer time until next spring, we welcome cosy knits, hot chocolates and for us at Revive 'Peel Season'!!

The change in the season to winter not only brings dark nights and colder weather it also brings a change to our skin. The low temperatures, reduced humidity and central heating causes the air to become drier. This environment shift tends to extract moisture from our skin, making it less supple, depleting the skins natural oils and harming the skins moisture retention which increases the chances of a weakened skin barrier. A compromised skin barrier can leave the skin vulnerable to irritants which leads to dehydration, dryness, redness, inflammation and ageing.

Less daylight hours aren't all bad though, as a time of transition is possibly the best time to rejuvenate and repair your skin. Correcting any damage from the summer and preparing your complexion for winter. At Revive we love the change of seasons, particularly this time of year as 'Peel Season' is upon us.

OUR TIPS TO MAKE WINTER YOUR BEST SKIN SEASON!

1. CLEANSER

As simple as switching your cleanser to a more nourishing one is an easy way to help skin during the winter transition, we love Environ's Youth EsstentiA Hydra-Intense Cleansing Lotion, it helps maintain the natural water proofing barrier of the skin to improve hydration leaving skin feeling soft and supple, also perfect for sensitive skin's as calms and heals any inflammation.

Top Tip - this cleanser can double up as a hydrating mask too.

2. HYDRATE FROM THE INSIDE OUT

Increasing your supplements always help this time of year, especially the addition of

Omegas. Great for managing oil production and hydration in the skin, whilst reducing skin inflammation and redness. Fantastic to prepare the skin for the change in the season...like swallowing a moisturiser for skin head to toe.

Advanced Nutrition Programme Skin Omegas+ are one of our bestselling supplements, scientifically proven synergy of nourishing omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, plus vitamin A to moisturise dry, rough or inflamed skin...perfect for keeping skin supple this winter.

3. SPF

With less sunlight during this time of year it can be tempting to cut sunscreen out of your routine - but think again! Even in winter, harmful UV light can still stress your skin’s moisture barrier, to maintain skin's health and hydration apply SPF daily all year round.

4. WATER IS SKIN'S BEST FRIEND

Skin appears more supple and youthful when it has a high-water content. There is water inside every skin cell, held by fats in the cell membrane. When water isn’t held within skin cells, the skin can become dry and flaky, which is prone in happening in the colder months.

Adding in a serum with Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is great way to keep cells hydrated.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body, especially in the skin. Holding up to 1000 times its own weight in water it plays a vital role in keeping skin plump and hydrated.

Ceramides also play an important role in keeping the skin hydrated and protected. Ceramides are lipids (fats) that are found naturally within the uppermost layers of the skin. They protect the skin, help it retain hydration, moisture and heal a damaged skin barrier. They make the skin plumper, smoother and softer.

With the combination of weather changes and dry air with central heating, the winter has been shown to reduce natural moisturising factors in the skin. The level of HA and ceramides drop in winter. So, if we don’t have sufficient ceramides, the stratum corneum (the outer layer in our skin) will be compromised, which can result in dry, flaky skin.

Our favourite serum is for Hyaluronic Acid is Environ's Avance Moisturiser - the perfect winter add in to any routine, not only does it add HA into the skin it sends messages down to tell your skin to stimulate and produce more of its own natural HA.

5. VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is in high demand in the winter months, not only from the body to help with a healthy immunity system to help fight off those winter bugs, but it is also one of the best vitamins for our skin. Vitamin C in the skin helps protect from free radical damage, stimulates collagen and smooths skin. It also plays a major role in brightening the skin and helping with pigmentation, therefore helping the skin to recover from any damaged caused over the summer month from sun exposure.

6. HANDS & NAILS

Don't forget about hands, nails and also lips, these can get very dry and cracked this time of year. A good cuticle oil and hand cream used daily will work wonders to prevent chapped, sore hands from the harsh temperatures and winds, and don't forget your gloves! For lips, a great tip is to take your hyaluronic serums across your lips then apply lip balm to seal in the hydration from the serum.

Revive's Recommendations - CND Solar Oil and Elim Ultra Rich Hand Therapy, pick yours up next time you are in the salon.

IN THE SALON

'Peel Season' (our favourite) - the winter months are the perfect time to have professional peel as we can take advantage of the shorter days and less daylight hours. This is when we can treat any damage from the summer months like pigmentation and uneven skin tone. Here in the salon our peels are a non-invasive intelligent skin peeling system which is fully customised that can be controlled throughout the treatment so are suitable for everybody.

Safe and highly effective peels help to regenerate skin without compromising the skin's natural functions. Maintaining the skin's integrity.

Benefits to a Peel
